Local Action Groups

   GENERAL COMPOSITION OF THE LAG's

A Local Action Group (LAG) is a non profit-making composition made up of public and private organisations from rural villages having a broad representation from different socio-economic sectors. Through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), LAGs can apply for financial assistance in the form of grants to implement the Local Development Strategy of their respective territory.

The main objective of the local development strategies is to deliver support to their respective rural areas especially through the implementation of small-scale projects. Through this approach, LAGs can target better the particular needs and priorities of their territory since they are part of the territory itself.

The territory covered by each LAG in Malta has its particular needs and challenges. The Local Development Strategies will try to face these challenges with creative solutions.

A call for applications for the drafting of Local Development Strategies was issued by the Managing Authority in March 2009. Three foundations have been formed and completed the respective Local Development Strategy and the latter were submitted to the Managing Authority for approval in December 2009. These foundations are Xlokk, Majjistral and Gozo.

Following approval of the strategies, Measure 41 of Axis 4 was launched. This enabled the three foundations to be certified as Local Action Groups (LAGs) so that they could start implementing the LEADER programme in their region. These LAGs will be administering specifically allocated funds under

• Measure 125 Action Type 3
• Measure 313 Action Type 3
• Measure 313 Action Type 4

The 3 LAGs that have been approved for funding under the Rural Development Programme are:

Majjistral Action Group

Xlokk Action Group

Gozo Action Group
